Different Forms of Yoga

Yoga has different forms and several people have classified yoga according to the types of exercise or meditation done. The ones mentioned here would be the general forms of yoga depending on its purpose. The classification is done with no particular emphasis on its importance so they are basically in no particular order.

One form of yoga is the therapeutic yoga that involves gentle yogic poses performed in smooth and slow sequences. The Svaroopa Yoga is one form where it aids in releasing tension in the spine and relieving back aches. Another form is the Bikram Yoga that utilizes heat while performing about 26 poses. The heat stimulates the release of toxins in the body through sweat.

The athletic yoga, on the other hand, is more fast-paced and integrates a series of poses that the participants must transition into with few breaks. Its primary goal is to provide you with a good cardiovascular workout as well as enhancing strength and stamina. A well-known form is the Ashtanga. Other forms which you may encounter are Koga, Jivamukti and Power Yoga.

The chief goal after all of yoga, is spiritual enlightenment, so we might as well mention the spiritual form of yoga. The purpose of this form is to rouse the mental and spiritual energy. It involves more conventional poses and sequences. Breathing exercises are emphasized and the art of chanting, stretching and meditation are integrated.  The more common forms of yoga falling into this category include Tibetan, Kundalini, Hatha, Ananda, Integral, Sivananda and Anusara.

The Inyegar Yoga may be considered the ‘eclectic’ form of yoga because it is an amalgam of different forms of yoga, depending on the yoga practitioner. Several props can be used, including blankets, chairs, resistance bands, etc. Its main goal is to ensure that you may achieve proper alignment and posture. It is not a surprise then poses are held for extended periods of time for this form.
